Cut back on multitasking. This is a talent of most mothers and what most fathers strive for but struggle with. It also may be directly connected with heart attacks in women and stress levels. We can do it but as a constant I have my doubts as to how healthy it is at the extreme levels that most women function. If you are washing dishes, then do just that. It does not have to be combined with talking on the phone.
If you are watching a DVD with your children then do just that and save folding the laundry for later. Telephone conversations at appropriate times may help. Unless you are waiting for an urgent call I would suggest never picking up the telephone during a meal or other special times. The answering machine works when you are at home, as well as when you are out. What is point in having modern conveniences if we do not utilize them to benefit our family and quality of life?
Create a blank calendar day. This should be sacred and celebrated like any other national holiday. Some of us plan ourselves to death! There is nothing like good old spontaneity and short term last minute plans that unfold naturally. I cannot tell you how many times I have kept plans that no longer suited me because I had made a commitment too far in advance. It is hard to know what is going to be happening with your kids one day in advance let alone weeks. Some of the nicest and most enjoyable time I share with friends and family are the gatherings that unfold spontaneously when it suites all parties.
