There are few teachers out there who teach basic study habits. Kids are expected to learn these habits from typical lesson plans and verbal encouragement, but not all kids learn well in a setting where there are 25 to 30 other students all asking questions and demanding the full attention of the teacher. Parents must take control of teaching kids study practices because without a strong base, kids are left with no means of learning quickly and efficiently and they will fall behind peers in middle school, high school and college.
Your Kid is Just too Hyper
Energy is a huge problem for kids with poor kids study habits. They want to run around after school, not sit in a seat for another hour or two only to be told it is time for dinner, then bath and finally bed. When is the time set aside just for kids?
Your Kid is Side Tracked Easily
You may think telling the dog to stop barking and your other children to be quiet during homework time is helping, but it's not. You are making just as much noise as the invaders you are trying to quiet. There needs to be a change in the dynamic of the home to facilitate good study practices. That change means everyone in the home needs to be focused on quiet time during homework time. As for the dog, you may need to buy a kennel where the dog can sit quietly or loudly in another room, while your kids are studying.
You Don't Know What to Teach About Kids Study Habits
This is probably the worst excuse for not teaching children good kids study habits. Yes, you have been out of school for quite some time, but that doesn't mean you get a free pass when it comes to teaching your children how to study. You are the parent and adult in the household and it is your business to be in their business when it comes to being prepared for future education.
Kids study habits are all about reducing excessive energy, making sure there is a quiet place to study and showing your children how to study more efficiently. You may need to work on study habits yourself to be better prepared to teach your children these basic skills they will carry for a lifetime. Your kids study practices will mold who they are and how they act in educational settings for the rest of their lives.
